Morning Melodies at Hamer Hall

In one sentence: a feel good show that features memorable and joyful songs from ‘Golden Age’ musicals performed by VCA Music Theatre students

How did it come about?

I have now directed this show many times, once in 2019 and again in 2022, 2024 and 2025 since a little thing called a global pandemic prevented the show occurring in 2020 and 2021 and I had a little maternity leave in there. Each year it has been a joy to create these shows with the VCA Music Theatre students. The shows are created with an audience of largely seniors in mind and celebrates what is colloquially (albeit problematically) known as the ‘Golden Age’ of musical theatre.

I aim to strike a balance between leaning into the stylistic aspects of this era that make it so entertaining and such a joy to witness, whilst maintaining an intersectional-feminist consciousness in staging, choreography and casting. These shows are fun both to create with students, fun to watch from the audience and are a highlight for all involved. The experience of working in Hamer Hall is simply marvellous.

The range of vocal ability, ethereal harmonies, interwoven with incredible seamless moves and stage presence with such depth in capturing the essence of these classic numbers was present from start to finish.
