Sing For Your Supra
In one sentence: it’s a travel show meets cabaret complete with tea and wine tastings.
How did it come about?
I have known Steph Clare-Cover for about a decade. I first met her as her dance teacher for a short course I was teaching for VCA Music Theatre. She was a brilliant student — diligent, talented, delightful. I taught her for a couple of years and when she was finished the course she said to me if there was ever any way she could be involved with my theatre company, Citizen Theatre, to please let her know. As it happened, I had a show coming up and needed volunteers to help with front of house. Since then, Steph has been involved with just about every Citizen Theatre show in some capacity — as a producer, social media creator, performer, assistant director.
While I was having a baby and adjusting to the monotony of early motherhood, she was off travelling the world to some places that I’d barely heard of, let alone visited. Both of us were having life-changing experiences. I couldn’t wait to hear about hers and introduce her to my son.
She came over one afternoon and told me about her trip to the Caucasus — a region that comprises of Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan, near Russia, Turkey and Iran. She described how her partner Ryland and her had musical exchanges in many of the places they stayed as he would play piano, she would sing and then the host she was staying with would also share some songs. This would all happen with wine or tea in hand and everyone basking in the joy of music. As she described these idyllic moments I had a shiver and said to her this needs to be a show. Sing For Your Supra was born.
Over the next year or so Steph would write, we would meet and shape to keep the stories flowing and music supporting and kept working until we had a show. Ryland was a great musical support, offering ideas for underscoring and getting acquainted with a range of styles on the piano and Panduri (a Georgian ukelele). Meanwhile, Steph had lots of very difficult songs to learn in 7 different languages and a huge solo show to memorise. By the time we got to April for the first Gasworks show, we knew we had something special.
Audiences loved sampling wine and teas as Steph told funny and heartwarming stories and dazzled them with her musical prowess. It is a dear show that continues to tour and I hope will touch many people to come, offering a joyous celebration of music, culture and life.
