Alexithymia
In one sentence: a play about not being able to articulate how you are feeling
How did it come about?
In this show I was aiming to create a work with autistic collaborators that both honoured their story and could be accessible for non-autistic people, so they could gain a deeper, embodied understanding of autism spectrum. My role as director was to interpret the evolving script and offer a feminist lens to the process. The process was a masterclass in communication styles where we all learnt a lot. Some of the directorial approaches included devising games/rules for how the colour coordinated space was used, learning from workshops led by the autistic collaborators, using sound and light to create structures that offered time and place since the set was minimal and using Laban and Chekhov technique to work with actors to arrive at the playing style.
